IND-181: IP PIN Rejection

Filter by Category:

The IRS rejection code IND-181 means that the Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) entered for the primary taxpayer is not valid. The IRS requires an IP PIN for certain filers. Even when filing a prior-year tax return, the primary taxpayer’s current IP PIN is required.

How to Fix the This

  • Option 1: Update your IP PIN and re-submit electronically.

If you have the correct IP PIN, simply log in to your PriorTax.com account and enter the IP PIN securely via the Resolve Rejection page to resubmit it to the IRS for e-filing.

  • Option 2: Print and mail your tax return.

If you do not have a valid IP PIN, or unable to obtain it, you cannot e-file your return. Sign in to your PriorTax.com account, download the PDF copy of your tax return to print, sign, and mail it to the IRS/State.
