If you have not yet filed your prior-year state tax returns, you must obtain your income statements for the tax year to do so. Your prior-year state tax information, such as your state tax withholding, is located on your income statements.
For example, on your W-2 statement, the state income tax amount is in box 17. This is the total amount of state tax your paid for the entire year.
In the case that you no longer have your income statements, you will have to request them. Please note, if you request a Wage and Income transcript from the IRS, you will not see the state tax withholding amounts. IRS transcripts only provide federal tax information.
To obtain your state income and withholding information, you will need to contact your state’s Department of Revenue. Check their website or call them directly. They may have you fill out a form to request state income tax information, similar to the federal process.
