If you have not yet filed your state return for prior year tax returns, you must obtain them. Your prior year state tax information such as your withholding is located on your income statements.
For example, on your W-2 statement, the state tax amount is in box 17. This is the total amount of state tax your paid for the entire year on your income.
In the case that you no longer have your income statements, you will have to request them. However, if you request a wage and income transcript from the IRS, you will not see the state tax withholding amounts. They only provide the federal tax withholding amounts.
In order to obtain your state amounts, you will need to contact your state department of revenue. They may have you fill out a request of income tax information form similar to the federal process.
