When filing a current year tax return, you have the option to electronically file your return. This means that you can enter valid bank information such as your routing and account number to receive your refund. Typically, once your tax return is accepted by the IRS through e-file, you should expect your refund within three weeks.
However, if you are filing a prior year tax return, you are required to paper-file your tax return. This means, you must print, sign and mail your return to the IRS. After the IRS receives your paper return, the time frame is six to eight weeks to expect your refund.
